Honestly, all I really want to do is write my stories. That's all. Write my stories so kids can read them and be happy for a while. Is that too much to ask?
Apparently so.
See, when I was a kid myself, long ago in the ancient 1980's, writing my little stories like "Lucile and Benji" and "Journey Through Zjanine" (yes, that's how it's spelled), I never dreamed of anything like a laptop even, let alone social media. I started out as a "professional" writer sending snail mail queries in the early 90's. (I'm pretty sure that's when agents invented ghosting.) Now we have email and form queries, which I can imagine has raised both the stress-level and the work-level of every agent and editor in the world. Not to mention adding a ton of "unfair" competition (not-really-but-lemme-whine-for-a-moment-here) for us writers with dreams of glory and fandoms dedicated to our worlds and movie deals and Newberry Honors and...
*Ahem*
ANYway, querying is only the beginning. I have a Facebook account that's doing pretty great, but that's because it's really ALL I do. (I have a couple others but I barely use them, to be brutally honest.) And many of my fellow authors also do Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter (UGH Twitter! I'll have to do a whole post about THAT sometime soon) and *ahem* blogs... just to name a few. These are all things that the publishing world expects authors to maintain on a daily basis -- the more the better -- all while still writing and editing entire books, AND, for many of us, also maintaining families and full-time day jobs.
The trope that writers don't sleep has never been more relevant than it is today.
As I warned above, this post has no point, nor will (m)any of them here. It's really just a rant / warmup for my actual writing which I will be leaving you do do shortly. Because that's what I do. I write stories. Fiction stories. FANTASTICAL fiction stories. Though I have studied them all in high school elective courses, college, and grad school, I've never been that interested in short stories, poetry, non-fiction, or the like, which are really the best ways to maintain a social media presence as an author. To this day, I STILL have no idea how to truly represent what I actually write to the online community, and I'm not sure I ever will. But it's not the 1980's anymore, and this is how the world works now, so I'll continue to attempt showing you all that my worlds really are worth visiting.
